Are there different sized cribs and crib mattresses?

I had a kid five years ago and bought a brand new crib at the time. The crib sheet, bumper, bedskirt, and mattress all worked perfectly with the crib I bought. I am getting ready to have my second child and decided to buy a new crib this time because my first one was a drop side and on top of that went through a flood, so I was concerned about safety. I bought a delta brand crib this time and got a bumper and skirt that was a few years old from a yard sale (the old stuff was destroyed in the flood). The mattress has a good two inch gap at the end and the bumper and skirt are too short as well. My parents took the old crib to their house and the stuff fits that crib.

So I bought a bumper and skirt at Pottery Barn Kids and they’re too LONG for the new crib, so apparently pottery barn cribs are even bigger. I went to amazon where I bought mattress and other people said they have had issues with that mattress being too short. But I put them back to back and my old crib mattress was the same size, so I don’t get it.

I was under the impression that it was a standardized type of thing like other types of beds because when you buy sheets, you just buy crib size–not some variety of it. So what’s the deal? Has anyone else had issues with things being the wrong size for their crib?
The whole thing confuses me, the only thing I can think is that either cribs are being made longer today than they were 5 years ago–which seems strange. Or the fact that the new crib is a convertible crib and the old one wasn’t. But still, I’d think they’d standardize things. I would blame the crib company, but then the pottery barn stuff was even bigger, so that’s what’s got me scratching my head.

I think what we’ll do is cut a foam piece and put it on the end of the bed between the crib and the mattress so it fits snug. The bumper can overlap, so that’s not a huge deal. I don’t want to send the mattress back because we ordered it online and that would be a huge hassle (and who’s to say that we’d have a different result with a different brand?) and by the time we’d get the new mattress the kid will already be here without a bed. It’s just weird, I don’t get it. :-)

What are some ways to get rid of mattresses/box springs?

I have two Sealy Posturepedic queen size mattresses, box springs, and frames. The beds are 10 years old but in excellent condition. If I can’t sell them, which charitable organizations pick up beds? Or, do the trash collectors pick them up? I live in an apartment complex and was told I can’t put them near the dumpsters.

Where can I find bed sheets that are colorful and/or patterned for a mattress up to 20"….?

instead of the boring ones that I see in every store? I can’t figure out why the stores only carry beautiful sheet sets for smaller mattresses-and most beds for sale now are huge. Makes no sense!

I want to get the Jysk Laura bed, will my queen mattress work with it?

I know that with Ikea beds if you get the frame they only fit there special mattress. Will my regular queen mattress work with it?
